For nearly 50 years, Highline Community College has fulfilled the traditional role of the community college in its service area of Southwest King County.

Highline Community College is proud of its nearly 50-year history of providing members of its diverse and multifaceted community with superior educational programs and services. Founded in 1961, Highline was the first community college in King County.

Today, Highline Community College is nationally and internationally recognized as a premier community college, a reputation earned through the development of an institutional culture that values innovation, globalization of curriculum, and community participation. The college serves approximately 10,000 students and 350,000 alumni, making it one of the state’s largest institutions of higher education. The main campus is located in Des Moines, with an extension campus 12 miles south in Federal Way. Highline serves the residents of three school districts-Federal Way, Highline, and Tukwila. Students from Seattle, Tacoma, and other communities are also drawn to Highline for its diversity and commitment to excellence.

Highline offers a wide range of academic transfer and professional-technical education programs, with online, day, evening and weekend classes, and takes a multi-cultural approach to education for the success of all its students and the prosperity of its surrounding communities. At the core of Highline’s mission and vision are the principles of stewardship for all students, regardless of their backgrounds.

Highline Community College meets the needs of South King County residents through innovative and quality education programs.

  • Through a creative partnership with Central Washington University, time and place-bound students have the opportunity to complete baccalaureate and masters degrees without ever leaving South King County. Highline and CWU jointly occupy the Higher Education Center on the main campus in Des Moines.
  • Highline’s Small Business Development Center [SBDC] and the Highline Center for Extended Learning [CEL] have teamed up to meet the needs of the business community. The SBDC is a resource for one-to-one, free, confidential, counseling, research, resources and technical assistance for small and medium-size business owners, managers and entrepreneurs in southwest King County. CEL provides training for professional advancement, technology, entrepreneurship and other business skills including customized training developed with businesses to increase employee workplace skills and knowledge for application in today’s competitive business environment.
  • Highline Community College is Center of Excellence for International Trade, Transportation and Logistics (ITTL) for the state of Washington, and is the flagship institution that will build and sustain Washington State’s competitive advantages through statewide leadership. Highline’s program is a network of partners, resources, and key communications that provide substantial support to the state’s international trade and development efforts.

For nearly 50 years, Highline has fulfilled the traditional role of the community college in its service area of Southwest King County. It prides itself as being not only the traditional transfer vehicle for students planning to attend a four-year college or university and a provider of professional-technical education programs, but also as a vital source of access to many who have been denied education because of poverty, lack of previous education, or language barriers. Highline’s many innovative programs and services demonstrate its commitment to provide all citizens and immigrants access to the rewards of education and training.
